I quickly realized how this drew attention to me and as I moved from one hall to another, I heard two people say to each other: “If this goes on like this with the business people, it’s going to be really bad”. Today, 9 years later, I have seen more suits at this event than ever before. It is a symbol of a change in the way we deal with software.

(Reading time 4 minutes)

To be fair, it has to be said that a general call for a dress code at this year’s TYPO3 Conference also helped a little. In the end, out of what felt like 8 people, we only have one who calls himself a developer. If the question had been who can code, I would probably have been the only one who would have had to answer in the negative. So it’s primarily a question of self-perception.

What I generally observe is that more and more people who used to call themselves developers are now leading teams or are involved in architecture work. And no longer see themselves as pure developers whose only goal is to develop beautiful, lean, fast and intelligent code.

Is he dying out of the “Developer”?

And I think this development is a good thing. Because the importance of software solutions has increased enormously in the last 10 years. And with it the importance of developers and programming itself.

And so our self-image has changed. Away from being a pure specialist with an insular mindset (“I don’t care how you use it, just tell me what it should do”) to becoming a digital expert specializing in software development.

This is a very positive development, as it promotes better cooperation and therefore ultimately better solutions.

Business takes over nerd-tum or nerds take over business?

And so this fear that the business people would hijack the techies has turned out to be complete nonsense. In fact, the opposite is true.

We’re seeing more shirts and suits because the techies are taking over the business. And not the other way around.

In fact, they are not only taking over business, but the whole world. A world consumed by software is porting developers into the highest caste of the workforce of human progress, so to speak. I know it sounds crass, but think about it. Every era has a profession and vocation that has been formative. Ours are the software developers and architects.

Techies take over

It is therefore no coincidence that “The Big Bang Theory” is dominated by a TV series that focuses on nerds and their lives. As a techie, there is a lot about this series that is not so funny, but rather everyday thinking, as soon as you subtract the deliberately exaggerated and scripted.

When the protagonist of the series, Sheldon Cooper, tries to help his neighbor with her relationship problems with the help of the “Schrödinger’s cat” thought experiment, it’s quite funny.

However, it is also great in the sense that basic concepts would be introduced, admittedly very superficially, to an audience that would probably never engage with them. This in turn promotes the acceptance of scientific concepts, which in turn accelerates the social adaptation of technology.

Learn a programming language, not Chinese

And so you can only shout to the young ones: “Learn a programming language, not Chinese”. And I say that with conviction. Not in the sense that everyone would have to learn programming, but I think that an integral understanding of how software is designed, created, maintained and developed should be part of every decision-maker’s toolkit.

As this is not yet the case, so many companies are still struggling to keep up with the changes customers are making towards digitalization.

But that’s a question of time. It will get better. Day by day. While the software eats away at our world as we used to know it. And recreates it.

Artikel auf Social Media teilen:

When I attended the TYPO3 conference in 2006 as a newbie, I made the mistake of putting on a shirt as one of 5 out of around 600 participants.
