This is most noticeable when it comes to grocery shopping. The starting point for this change was a Saturday morning in the fall of 2012, when my wife and I struggled through Migros with our young children (then 3 and 1.5) on a rainy day to do the weekly shopping.

(Reading time: 6 minutes)

Back at home, I set about lugging the <del>6</del> 8 shopping bags up to the house. This would not be a problem. However, you have to know that our house is around 80 meters away from the garage on foot. The path has steps and is steep because the property is on a slope. As I can’t manage more than 3 bags in one aisle, I had to cover the distance 3 times. In the second gear, I had to take a short break because I was out of breath and put the paper bags down. The rain was getting heavier by now. When I tried to pick up the bags again, two of them tore because of the now soaked paper and the entire contents spilled onto the sidewalk and some of them inevitably under the adjacent bushes. So there I was… In the pouring rain, half my shopping spread out on the ground in front of me. That was the moment I decided that I would never do that again.

A solution had to be found

My wife and I had discussed various ways of making these time-consuming and nerve-wracking shopping trips easier in future. Delegate the shopping to just one family member (i.e. me) instead of going with the whole family? Assign someone else to do it? One was that it was extremely tedious to get things up there, but the other was to spend 2-3 hours every Saturday morning doing it. In the end, we decided that we could just order all the stuff from LeShop. They would then lug it up and bring it to the front door. No sooner said than done and, amazingly, it worked reliably from the very first day.

What has changed since then?

Since then, we spend an average of half an hour on the weekly shop. This includes compiling the article list, ordering from LeShop and putting the articles away. A time saving of at least 2 hours. You’re probably thinking: So what, it’s only two hours. But please extrapolate it. That’s one day a month or 11 days a year (we are on vacation for at least 1 month). The financially-minded among our readers are also welcome to calculate the opportunity costs for themselves. All in all, there is a massive difference.

What works – what doesn’t?

What works very well are the mundane items, i.e. basic foodstuffs, mineral water (even if LeShop does not yet stock my favorite mineral water, Eptinger ). In general, articles for everyday use. What is not possible is fresh meat or cheese, for example. We have specialist stores in our town that simply deliver incomparably better quality. However, these are products that we have rarely bought from Migros before. Eggs are another dilemma. Somehow you just don’t manage to get all 15 eggs to the house undamaged. So we often have fried eggs for breakfast on Saturday mornings. If the courier was particularly careless, it can sometimes turn into a family tortilla.

The constellation “family with <del>married</del> couple and children” (now 3) is not exactly the representative family situation. Weekly shopping (which also requires a certain amount of meal planning) is the minority. Busy families shop from day to day. LeShop is not suitable for this because of the minimum order quantity of CHF 100. And they don’t deliver fast enough for that.

And the social aspect?

When I first ordered, I thought something would be missing. On closer inspection, at least that’s how it is here in the country, the vast majority of people shopping are grumpy, slightly annoyed and I rarely saw a happy face. And the old schoolmates you sometimes meet, well, I haven’t met them since. On the other hand, I have made new “colleagues”. I’ll never forget the Rastaman with dreadlocks down to his waistband who lugged up a particularly large delivery of water and tinned food in the worst of the <del>snow</del>and greeted me at 7:15 in the morning with “Hello my Brother”, high-fived me, was as happy as a little child that I knew Abba Shant-I, hugged me goodbye and spontaneously invited me to the Notting Hill Carnival as if it were his event alone. Or, at the other end of the experience spectrum, so to speak, the courier who muttered a quiet “always this shitty house here” on the second delivery and, when I asked, specified: “For you, house is all well and good, for me this house sucks, I hate it”. I couldn’t blame him, because I knew exactly how hard it was to drag myself up the hill. Between these two extreme experiences are countless reliable, friendly, courteous contacts with people who really go out of their way.

What can LeShop do better?

First of all, I don’t think LeShop needs to do anything better: The logistics. In the two years, there was exactly one delivery delay, i.e. part of the delivery was only delivered on Monday instead of Saturday. The handling of the issue and the service were perfect. I also rely completely on LeShop for larger invitations, which I do give a few times a year. It simply works.

However, the store itself needs to take action. When people talk about how orders via the app have grown so much again, I have to smile. It’s no wonder, because the desktop version is simply an imposition. I’ll spare you all the details. Just visit the site yourself and try searching for a product you love. Let’s say, for example, coconut flakes (note: the product is in the range). The search, whether in the app or on the desktop version, is the low point. Basics are missing. Basics, of course, that would directly boost sales for LeShop.

Not to mention other features and models. Personally, what would help me most would be some kind of small scanning station permanently installed in the kitchen, where I could simply pull up items that I want to reorder and add them to the order list. A use case that every large family is likely to have. I would even pay for such a “private POS”. It would save me having to write down the products I want to order. I can also scan the items with the app. But that’s even more inconvenient than writing them down on paper. Things run out while you’re cooking and not when you’re sitting down in peace and quiet with your smartphone in your hand. There are still countless ways to make the whole process leaner and more convenient for the customer.

Digital transformation?

What does all this have to do with the digital transformation? Of course, as a family we’ve just come into a situation where it all makes sense because of the children, but that’s not the point. My own example shows that the motivation to use new technology and services arises from the desire to solve a personal problem or to make life easier. The barrier to using this offer must be low enough. It has been particularly low since tablets were introduced, bringing the Internet into the kitchen and living room. This has made it much easier to place an order. Just because the computer comes to me and I don’t have to go to it. The bottom line is that it’s simply the better option for getting our groceries, which is why we use it. And: when I told my mother a few weeks later that we were now shopping this way, she said it was probably no longer for her. Only to add, after a brief pause for thought, that when she got older and was no longer able to walk so well, she could do her shopping that way. The days when the use of digital services was a question of faith are long gone. Society is looking for the easiest way to lead a comfortable life. At the moment, it is being supported by digital services, but soon we will see much more technology such as robotics, bionics, etc.

Artikel auf Social Media teilen:

My shopping behavior has changed fundamentally in recent years.
