Sentences like: “I’m curious to see what the community has to say about this” or “If the community realizes this” – I always thought “Hey, we’ re all the community”. I had to realize that most people have a completely wrong picture of a community, as they only count a very small group of people as part of it. But that’s probably not the case, and from these considerations I have gradually developed a model to illustrate community structures, which I think is generally valid in the form plus/minus. So far so good.

(Reading time: 4 minutes)

If you’ve been to a TYPO3 event or talk with me, you probably already know it – it’s the “Community Onion”. I always paint it somewhere as soon as the conversation turns to the community. The community onion model creates a more differentiated understanding of a community and the various participants in the community ecosystem. As follows:

1. common sense

I call common sense a set of values or interests that holds the community together. This is, so to speak, the lowest <del>remaining</del> unifying denominator of all participants. The core of the community, so to speak. Typically, this is not a product or a brand, but the values or interests that unite the community.

2. jesus

The Jesuses (plural) are the exponents of the community. They would be nailed to the cross for the community (hence the name), usually enjoy cult status and are regarded as role models for the contributors. They manage to shape opinions in the community and influence people. As a rule, their effective contribution is no longer outstanding. However, they have taken on a thought leadership role.

3. core contributors

The Core Contributors advance the project through their work. They work constantly, are reliable and are involved in significant parts of their daily lives. Typically, this work is a tangible contribution (such as software code), but can also be of a social nature.

4. contributors

The contributors also contribute work to the project. In contrast to the core contributors, however, they do this sporadically and sometimes unreliably. They participate on special occasions (e.g. sprints), but are then sometimes absent for longer periods of time.

5. ecosystem enabler

These are usually the companies that found the community or the company that owns the brand. But they can also be sales partners, for example. They all make it possible (financially) for the community to come together. The role of the ecosystem enabler can be very strong (corporate) or very weak (NPO, OpenSource, NfP, etc.).

6. consultants

Consultants are everywhere. They are typically in the background and mainly have an impact on product users. They do not count themselves as part of the community, but sometimes have a considerable influence on various other participants.

7. product users

The last group are the product users. They are completely unaware that they belong to the community. However, they actually form the backbone.

What do you think? What should be added to the model?
