If you listen to CIOs from larger companies in interviews, you might get the feeling that the cloud is already fully established as a key solution component and is in use everywhere.

(This article first appeared on topsoft.ch)

Desire vs. reality

From many conversations with decision-makers in the IT sector, I know that this is not the case. There are various reasons why this is the case. Firstly, there are still concerns about data protection, even though the legal conditions would actually be in favor of the cloud in the vast majority of cases. Secondly, too many existing business-critical applications can only be migrated to the cloud with a great deal of effort. Time and budgets are tight everywhere and, unfortunately, it is often easier and cheaper to invest money in maintaining legacy systems than to break new ground.

Myopia

This is a rather short-sighted approach. The bottom line is that it reduces the company’s long-term competitiveness and flexibility in favor of short-term financial impact. If there is one thing that is important in business today, it is to be fast and flexible.

I believe that no company will be able to avoid the cloud in the future. The advantages and speed that result from the use of cloud options are too great. Porting existing legacy applications to the cloud is one thing, but using new “cloud-native” software in the company is a completely different dimension.

“Cloud-native” software opens up completely new possibilities for companies, as it is designed from the ground up to utilize the economies of scale of the cloud, as the name suggests, “natively”. The advantage of such software lies not only in the operation of the solution in the cloud, but is also directly reflected in the concept and architecture of the application.

Opportunity for companies and software providers alike

CIOs who consistently rely on cloud and best-of-breed solutions today will gain clout and can also save money in the medium term. However, the cultural change from “on-premise” to “cloud” is not so easy. The challenges lie not only in the culture per se, but also in the lack of cloud expertise in some IT teams.

The cloud opens up completely new market opportunities for software providers. The software world is bursting with niches in which the transition to the cloud has not yet been completed. In combination with the pay-per-use model, it is comparatively easy to take a slice of the pie from the market leaders in these niches.

This needs to be utilized – on both sides. IT, as the core infrastructure, is still far too expensive and too complex. Cloud applications are the way to quickly deployable, cost-effective and highly flexible IT. And I believe we are only at the beginning.

Artikel auf Social Media teilen:

Cloud is one of the driving topics in IT today.
