If you like offices like I do, that was a great thing. Because I love the spaces and opportunities that offices offer – they have always been more of a creative workshop for me than anything else. Since the Covid measures, however, my colleagues’ relationship with the office has changed fundamentally. With much more far-reaching consequences for the software industry than expected.

Collective forced learning

The obligation to work from home has suddenly made decision-makers and employees realize that there are indeed advantages to working remotely. In fact, many employees have probably always wanted to work at least partially remotely. The pandemic has now forced everyone to work from home and, lo and behold, it’s working well!

Of course, there are situations that can be handled better in the office, but many tasks can be handled better or at least just as well in the home office. This collective forced learning has made it clear to everyone that remote working is possible. I know of very few companies that “force” their employees back into the office.

“Hybrid” becomes an advantage for companies looking for employees

And that wouldn’t be wise either. From many conversations with employees and applicants, I have learned that the ability to work “hybrid” – i.e. partly in the office and partly at home – is now considered a decisive advantage of a job. We will therefore have to adapt our job offers accordingly.

Software becomes more “collaborative”

But “hybrid” also has an impact on software products. B2B software in particular must become much more collaborative due to distributed working. This is because this separation is not only spatial, but usually also temporal. Software that can cover time-shifted working well will gain more and more ground in the market. This step towards a “hybrid” workforce is changing companies’ processes more than one might think at first glance.

Effects on software development

Last but not least, I was amazed at how quickly the salaries of remote near-shore software developers have risen in recent months. This is logical at first and was foreseeable: The obligation to work from home in many companies made remote work an option in the first place and a lot of additional demand has impacted the already dry market. The momentum of this effect came as a surprise to me.

“Hybrid” is the new “office”

I think this development is irreversible. The new standard in IT and software development will be a hybrid working mode. It will further increase productivity and fits into a world that is becoming ever faster and more flexible. So let’s provide the tools.

Artikel auf Social Media teilen:

I’ve spent most of my life in offices so far.
